We were recently inspected by Ofsted under the new national inspection framework, which sets significantly higher expectations and places a strong emphasis on sustained impact over time. As this was our first inspection under the revised framework, outcomes cannot be directly compared with previous inspections.
Inspectors recognised the journey the school is on, including recent changes to leadership and staffing, and highlighted many positive aspects of daily school life. They noted that pupils are happy, feel safe, and quickly develop a strong sense of belonging.
Leaders, governors and the Quantock Education Trust were recognised as being ambitious for pupils, with a clear and accurate understanding of the school’s strengths and priorities for improvement. The Local Governing Committee and Trust were seen to work closely with school leaders, providing appropriate challenge and support, particularly in relation to improving the consistency of teaching and pupils’ achievement. Inspectors noted that this work is ongoing and that it is too early to see its full impact.
Attendance and behaviour were judged to meet the expected standard. Pupils were described as polite, kind and welcoming, and the school was seen as calm and orderly, supporting pupils to engage positively in their learning. Behaviour expectations are applied consistently, alongside strong pastoral support.
The school’s personal development and wellbeing offer was identified as a strength. Pupils benefit from a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond the curriculum, helping them to develop confidence, understand the wider world, and show respect for others. Inspectors noted pupils’ maturity, empathy and understanding of values such as respect, democracy and equality.
Some areas were identified as ‘Needs attention’ during the inspection. These areas are already central to our School Development Plan, which was in place prior to the inspection, and this work continues with increased momentum. Inspectors confirmed that leaders have a clear and accurate view of what needs to improve and are focused on securing positive outcomes for all pupils.
We remain confident in our direction of travel and firmly committed to raising standards, ensuring that every child receives a high-quality education in a safe, caring and inclusive environment.
