Sequencing of English Content over time

Although teachers use assessments to plan and amend English learning journeys by analysing things like vocabulary, spelling, punctuation and Grammar, there are big ideas that are constantly revisited in each phase.  These English concepts enable children to progress and achieve age-related expectations.

Narrative Concepts:

  • Narrative plots- e.g. Rags to Riches, Defeat the Monster, Warning Tale
  • Narrative Features- e.g. Setting, character descriptions, openings and endings
  • Grammar and punctuation- e.g. sentence types, grammar effects, dialogue
Non-Fiction Concepts (we aim for children to be exposed to the 6 types every year):

  • Non-fiction Features- e.g. Verb tenses, writerly techniques, formality
  • Presentational Features- e.g. images and text, use of computers, importance of underlining
Poetry Concepts:

  • Poetry experiences- e.g. performing and memorising poems, collaborating, games
  • Poetry forms- e.g. Haiku, Cinquains, List poetry
  • Effects- e.g. simile, metaphor, emotional response in audience.
Below is the overview of this year and you will be able to see the concepts being explored with Stogursey children this year.

Phonics, reading and spelling schemes

To support phonics and reading at Stogursey School we use:
  •  No Nonsense Phonics and Spelling Scheme
We have developed an accelerated reading scheme to aid progress and has been now standardised using the Reading Recovery Books Bands.  This scheme is now called 'Stogursey Reading Partners' (SRP).  Books from schemes now included in our scheme are:
  • Oxford Reading tree
  • Big Cat
  • Pearson Bug Club
  • Heinemann
As well as this, we have developed a four-stage scale for children leaving SRP and going onto Free Reading.  This teaches children about commitment to books, careful book choice, background knowledge leading to sound comprehension and reading stamina.

The Teaching of Reading in Class

We provide a responsive solution to this based on need.  Some children will need 1:1 intervention, other small group work such as Reciprocal Reading but the majority will be taught through main lessons through Reader Talk (Talk for Writing approach) and whole-class guided reading.
