Good morning Beacon Class!
I look forward to seeing some of your news reports from yesterday! I hope you all had fun.
Today I will recap the story of Isatou and the Recycling Women of Gambia and read the next few pages.
I would like you to watch the video and then look at the news report (click here) about children in Manila. Manila is the capital city of the Philippines (a set of islands in the Pacific ocean in the south east part of the Asian continent).
Parts of Manila have been heavily affected by dumped waste/plastic pollution and many children find themselves collecting plastic and other materials from the piles of waste in order to earn money for their families. Have a look at the photographs below.
The news report talks about how a new school has been set up for children who have been living and working in these conditions.
I would like you to read the extract I have taken from the news report (see video and photographs below) and think about which words or phrases had the most impact on you. Draw a large box and separate it into quarters. Label each box: smell, feel, see, hear.
List the words which had a high impact/helped you visualise Jamie's home in the appropriate box. Next, using the photographs, think of some more words or phrases which you think could be used to describe Jamies home and add them to the boxes in the grid.
1. Watch video
2. Listen to news report extract and draw what you visualise Jamies home is like
3. Draw a grid and label 'smell, see, feel, hear' then add the language from the report which helped you visualise Jamie's home
4. Use the photos to help you add some more descriptive words or phrases to the grid which could be used to describe Jamie's home
