Spring Term Topic
Let’s Build an Empire!
Hello Kookaburra Class and welcome back for the spring term!
Below is an outline of what we intend to learn this term. We are also inviting parents and carers to come in and join us at the end of our learning journey to see what we have achieved!
Year 2 parents and guardians will also be invited in for a meeting to see what is involved in the Year 2 SAT’s exams which will take place in May.
We will continue to practise our addition and subtraction skills through daily arithmetic sessions in the mornings. Our main topic this term is multiplication and division. We will learn strategies to help us remember our multiplication tables such as singing, games, making and drawing arrays and playing TTRock Stars!
Every afternoon we have a maths meeting where we sing some really cool multiplication songs and practise our skills in other areas of maths such as shape, time and measure!
This term our English work will be linked directly with our topic ‘The Roman Empire’. We will produce an eyewitness report about Mount Vesuvius, a recount of what it is like to live in a Roman city/town, a narrative about a Roman Emperor and a letter of persuasion to become an emperor for a day!
For this writing we will be learning how to use different sentence types (such as exclamations, questions, statements and commands) in our writing and apply the correct punctuation. We will learn how to identify and write expanded noun phrases and inverted commas for speech. We will develop our dictionary skills by researching new vocabulary we encounter in our new topic.
This term we will be learning about the Romans. This will include a study of the Roman army, the empire, emperors and their gruesome traits! As well as learning about Roman lifestyle (for the rich and the poor) and what the Romans contributed to Britain. At the end of the term one child from Kookaburra Class will successfully win the chance to be ‘emperor’ or ‘empress’ for a day!
With our theme for this term being the Romans we have no shortage of artistic and design ideas to choose from! We will be having a roman food baking day, making mosaic clocks, real laurel wreaths, Roman weaponry and armour and even creating our own clay busts (with ourselves as emperors and empresses of course!).
We will continue to have fantastic music lessons with Mrs Morgan once a week with Year 2 pupils learning to cello and Year 3 pupils developing their already wonderful skills on the violins!
We continue our French language learning journey with Mrs Wall and Mrs Hobbs. We always have fun while we learn and this term will be no exception! We will begin by learning the names of many common pets and even some wild animals! We continue to practise French greetings and learn through a number of fantastic songs!
As we draw closer to the Easter Holidays in the second half of the term we will be preparing for our annual Easter service. Prior to this our topic will be Salvation and Easter. We will revisit the Easter Story and secure our understanding. We will dig deeper and reveal why Easter is important to Christians.
Miss Hancock is back every Monday afternoon and this term she has an exciting line up of gymnastics and multi-skills to help us develop our physical skills! Mrs Irish joins us every Friday and this term we will be working on our dance moves!
As always, please make sure your child has a full P.E kit in school at all times and make sure you are listening to your child read every evening and sign their reading diary so that they can earn a reading star each day!
