We will begin this term by focusing on non-chronological reports and will first look at the difference between fiction and nonfiction. The children will learn the features of a report and will do lots of research about the Romans. This will then lead to the children writing their own non-chronological report. We will then move on to narrative writing and the children will write their own Voyage & Return story with a Roman theme.
We will be continuing our daily phonics sessions and one of the main focus areas for the reception children will still be on blending sounds to read words. The year 1 children will be focusing on using their existing phonic knowledge to segment and blend sounds to read. Both year groups will continue to learn new phonemes and words each week. It would be helpful if you could continue to support your child with their phonics learning by using the resources that were sent home.
It is really important for your child’s progress in both reading and writing that they read at home as many times as possible. Please could you support this by making a log in your child’s reading record every time they read.
BOOK CHANGE DAYS
In order for your child to become fluent in their reading, they will need to read or share their book several times, both at home and at school. Alongside this fluency they will also need to develop their comprehension skills by talking about the book that they are reading. Your child's book will be changed when they are confident at reading the story and have completed a comprehension activity.
This term our topic theme is ‘let’s build an empire’ and will be focusing on the Romans. We will begin the term by learning who the Romans were and then each week will focus on a different aspect of Roman life. These areas will include emperors, roman entertainment and roman homes. The curriculum focus will be History and Design & Technology.
The children have gained a good understanding of our school values but we will continue to review them to deepen their understanding. Our theme for this half term will be ‘’ and we will be exploring the question of ‘what do Christians believe God is like?’ The children will have lots of opportunities to talk about the stories and reflect back on our focus question.
This half term the children will have two P.E sessions; one on a Tuesday and one on a Friday. Please ensure that your child’s P.E kit is named so that no items will be lost. If your child has pierced ears then please ensure that they have tape to wear during P.E to avoid injury.
